Re Food Supplements: I Am A Sucker For Food Supplements? Are They Healthy And Really Promote One’s Health

and wellness? What are the side effects and other harm it can do to our body? I’ve been taking VCO in capsules, ganoderma, amway products, cosway products and even glutathione and vitamin C. I just stopped taking Vit E since the one i used to take was synthetic.

  1. Heh, it’s a hard question.
I’m sure you must have met the health nut who learns some literature, and then decides you need to use ____ and ____ and ___, and before long a 100 things have gotten on the list, yet when it’s all said and done, you don’t see any major difference between the obsessive supplement/holistic health person, and some random guy on the street.
This is one of the most common points I see to discredit supplements.
Anyhow, here are the basic points of supplementing that I think matter.
    1) Ability to absorb into body. Generally speaking, the lower quality supplements will not be absorbed by your body (or say 5% of the total ammount you brought in actually gets into your body). For this reason, the type you get is extremely important. I read a long article detailing this, if you want I can dig it up.
    2) Supplements gotten from food. Generally speaking, fresh food is the best source of supplements. The absorbtion process I referred to earlier is optimal here. One of the funniest consequences of this fact resides in the act that the calcium in pasteurized milk doesn’t really absorb, while that in leafy green vegatables fills your system, (so as a result, many people actually get most of their calcium from vegatables, contrary to what all the got milk adds insinuate.)
    3) Unfortunately, due to bad treatment of soils, many are extremely lacking in minerals, and as a result, many vegatables gotten these days are lacking all the minerals needed for human consumption. Some guy was actually famous for seeding farmers crop lands with the minerals he found to be missing, and having the resulting food be extremely healthy and have higher crop yields (I can get the source). Also, a lot of the meat we have these days is factory farmed, and mostly fed a diet of corn and soy. As a result it never is allowed the opportunity to collect the valuable trace minerals we would normally need.
    4) From all the reading I have done thusfar on supplements, the consistent trend has been that “supplementing normally has a minimal effect on health….unless the mineral is already deficient in the individual, in which case the affects are extraordinary. So, if you were missing selenium, and you took a multivitamin that had selenium along with 50 other things, it would benefit you, but a tiny pill with only the selenium would do nearly the same thing. As a result, getting a simple blood test to determine what supplements you are lacking is the way to go.
    5) Despite all the criticisms I have given, I support supplementing, but mainly avoid it due to the fact that I can never remember to take pills (and don’t want to spend money on them, but when I lived with my parents, the forgetfullness was enough to make me abstain). I have quite a few friends who are naturopaths, and they all rabidly support supplementation, with justifiable reasons, I am just slightly more conservative on the matter.
    6) there are “miracle” supplements that pop up every now and then, claiming to cure all ills. I personally believe most of these are simply marketing gimmics. However…many times their claims completely apply if they are a lacking mineral in your body. I do actually think there are a few supplements floating around that could have amazing effects, regardless of if you have a defficiency etc, but those that fulfill this model are fairly rare. At this point in time I’m investigating hydrogen peroxide, and various solids that break down into it in the bloodstream.
Hope that was a good answer!
*I do use vitamin C, but I recently found out nearly all vit C in the US is produced in China, which has a fairly awful record for quality of products (ie. allowing a lot of toxic chemicals to get into the production). This is another issue to watch out for with supplements.

  2. You need to eat the fruits and veggies whole. You can even do frozen fruits and veggies. There are a lot more healthier than the so called Food supplements.

  3. since i used to work for a multinational pharmaceutical company, personally i’m not into those food supplements. maybe because we were taught back then that medicine-related products should be carefully and rigorously tested. i want long-term studies to back up the medicines/supplements i’m ingesting just to be sure…i’m kinda wary really since if those prescription drugs can cause mild to severe side effects, how much more for those supplements? i guess it’s better to be safe than sorry ;)

  4. Hi,
    Known side effects:
VCO – increases cholesterol (good and bad); a DOH test result
Ganoderma/Glutathione – whitening of skin (causes depletion of melanin pigment essential in preventing skin cancer)
Amway/Cosway prods – no known side effects though needs a significant volume/exposure to product before desired effects are felt.
Vitamin C (synthetic) – not bioactive; can’t be processed readily by the body.
I suggest you try goji berry juice. Now called the MOST NUTRITIONALLY DENSE FOOD ON EARTH – It’s 100% all natural, no over dose, no side effects, and taste so good! It’s not herbal (like roots, leaves, seeds, rind, etc.) but a juice (like apple or orange juice). I guarantee you’ll get great results – why? This is the present craze in Hollywood, Australia, Canada, etc.! Murad (cosmetic lines) even use it as a raw material in ther cosmetics because of its skin rejuvinating properties!
Below are some helpful links for your reference.
Hope this could help you. Good Luck!
    Edwin
