To all the people who said they never heard of this, there are a ton of questions everyday in yahoo!answers that ask this. If you only go on here once a day, it is likely that you will see this asked.
Also, I personally can’t answer this for you. I guess it is just on of those “the grass is greener on the other side of the fence” situations.

Maybe a small minority might do this. More people are hitting tanning salons than are going to “whitening salons”
Comment by Arielle T on 2 August 2009:
EW? why would they do that! naturally tanned skin looks sooo much hotter.
i guess some people think it looks more elegant and healthy.
i disagree

one of life’s great paradoxes is that dark people want to be lighter and light people want to be darker. they should be happy in their own skin.
Comment by AT6381 on 2 August 2009:
you mean DARKEN their skin, i’ve never heard of anyone wanting to be whiter!

Cause when you’re white you’re always right but when you’re brown don’t come around.

I don’t know. I have very light skin and wish it was darker.
Maybe it is for really red or pink skin.
Comment by Adrianne on 3 August 2009:
Those products aren’t to bleach the skin white. It’s to even out skin tone. There are some people who have sun damage and have sun spots and patches of skin that are darker, so they use a brightening cream to even it all out into one color. It doesn’t make you like a shade lighter or anything.

I have dark skin – and love it!!!
But at least here in Mexico people can be very racist if you’re dark skinned – usually blonds are treated in a better way.
Inferiority complex, i guess.
Comment by Bayybee. on 3 August 2009:
um..i like darker skin:D like mine
i dont like really really white skin…. i like people with some color:)
tan YUMMMYY:D
Comment by baby boo on 3 August 2009:
for the same reason we go on sunbeds to look darker. we all want something we have not got. looking tanned makes me feel better about myself and others feel better looking lighter. each to there own is what i say.

I know ive been hearing about this latley too, people just try SO HARD to be perfect these days that companies are making crazy products to achieve this.. i mean make up and hair extentions weight loss pills thats already enough, but WHITING YOUR SKIN? Thats soooo crazy i think any one who doesnt have a really really really good reason to do this (which i cant think of one) is crazy.. but than again if u think about it, tanning is normal so why not making ur skin lighter? i dunno this iz weird lol

It’s pretty common outside of western europe and north america. A lot of naturally darker skinned people and some asian ethnicities get dark age spots when they age, or even when young and these are considered very unattractive. Another reason is cultural. In most, if not all, Asian cultures (including India and Sri Lanka), fair skin has always been seen as more feminine and higher class. It’s been that way for thousands of years. Another reason for countries/cultures like Mexico and S. America is from, as other people said, inferiority complex and their own internal racism that remained far longer than any colonialism ever did. That problem is among them, honestly. They need to work it out for themselves.
It’s very apparent in this thread that most people who answered with a preference for tan are from the US and a few years behind the international fashion industry, haha.

I dunno where you heard that but ive never heard that in my life. Most people want to be tan.

I think it all goes back to slavery and white’s being the dominating race. Even though slavery has ended for the most part, I still think the same thoughts that ran through people’s thoughts back then have lived through to our generation. I think it is pretty sad, I mean I see darker skinned persons getting looked down and made fun of constantly and it makes you wonder how much have we as a nation really developed over the years. Lighter toned people have been marked as “beauty” in our society and as that is portrayed, everyone seems to follow. I mean whatever race it might be the darker side of that race is always the “uglier” side. Devastating, really, that people whiten their skin but what do you expect when porcelain colored skin is beautiful and model material in this country.

i had no idea people did this
