What’s This Obsession With Lighter Skin Tone?

What’s this obsession with lighter skin tone? It borders on Apartheid!
Before you dismiss this question, consider this- Skin whitening/lightening cremes/lotions are the fastest selling cosmetic products the world over. In China, all of Asia, The Americas and even Africa – where they have the most beautiful black marble glow and clear complexion.
Girls are particularly expected to be “fairer” than the rest of them.
Is this hypocrisy/ stupidity/blind following/racism-of-sorts or what…..help me understand this….please.
Is it simply craving what you don’t have…?

  1. In east Asia, the desire for porcelain-like skin is due to socioeconomics. Darker skin was (and still is) associated with lower social class, and it’s easy to understand why. People with lower status were laborers and worked outdoors, causing darker skin. Those with high status did not work the fields, keeping their skin light. It’s an obvious association, not hypocrisy or racism.
In the modern world, this obsession still exists, but it seems to be fading (pardon the pun), which is a good thing, as women of all skin tones are beautiful.

  2. I agree with David, it is more of a status symbol then anything. Your assumption that it is racist or Apartheid, emphasizes your ignorance on the subject. It also makes you look just as judgmental and arrogant as those you are hoping to discredit. Maybe people prefer different looks, so be it. I don’t recall anyone making it a mandate that one HAS to use these products. People willfully purchase them. It’s called free will.

  3. i think people that do that may one have problems an self conflictions or 2 they may have blotches on hte skin that they want cleared up so they can have an even tone. i persona;;y am happy with my dark skin tis beautiful and so am i 4 it

  4. I use it on my burns scars
Black is lovely though I dislike fake spray on tans and black people turning themselves white, I dunno I s’pose that’s a bit obsessive but live and let live, hey?

  5. I don’t know, but being fair skinned, I’ve always wondered what the obsession with tan skin is.

  6. No one is obsessing but you. You failed to mention girls at the tanning salon.

  7. its a sad sad world people r just so ignorant u shud luv the skin ur in *sighhhs*

  8. Don’t take it so far as apartheid. You are right about the lightening of the skin, and at the same time, there are girls out there darkening their skin as well. Some do it for good, some for whatever other reason. If darker women want to turn into Michael Jackson, let the dumb broads do it-if they want to f*** up their bodies, let them pay fror it in the long haul. Don’t worry about it. Also, if women want to turn their skin into leather, that’s their dumb a** fault. Same thing. I understand where you’re coming from, but you don’t need to flip out because of it. It’s not a racist/apartheid thing at all. It’s very obvious these women have no confidence nor self respect for themselves, so…(shrugs shoulders)

  9. LoL…..
    ur ridiculous
what about all these white girls who are obsessed with tanning
    get a grip
    =)
i mean that in the nicest way possible

  10. I think you’re looking a BIT too far into this, in fact what you’re saying is practically the opposite. I can’t even tell you how many times I come across people wishing they had darker skin so they spend hours trying to tan themselves.

  11. White looks better, why do people bleach their teeth white?

  12. it is a passing phase and will go away, just let time do it’s job
