Roslyn, NY (PRWEB) September 16, 2009

The U.S. Market for nutritional supplements, including vitamins, minerals, herbals and combination products, is expected to reach $ 8.5 billion by 2012, a 39 percent jump since 2007.

Supplements can be beneficial

“Vitamin D is an important nutrient, for example” says Joshua L. Fox, M.D., leading dermatologist and medical director of Advanced Dermatology on Long Island and in New York City. “Studies show a connection between low serum Vitamin D levels and increased risk of certain types of cancers, neurologic diseases, autoimmune disease and cardiovascular disease. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends obtaining Vitamin D from natural food sources, including milk, but if that’s not happening, I encourage clients to take Vitamin D supplements (i.e. 1,000u for people with minimal sun exposure) at appropriate levels.”

In addition, Vitamins A, E and C have been shown to help a variety of skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis and wrinkles. Studies have shown zinc and berberine help prevent and treat acne by attacking the “toxins” that cause flare-ups. Lycopene is an excellent antioxidant for the skin.

They can also negatively impact skin

Supplement makers tout the health benefits of their products, and target them to everyone from teens to seniors. Some supplements, however, may adversely affect the skin, resulting in itching, rashes, skin discoloration, acne, burning sensations, promote bleeding and hives, for example.

For a long time skin care manufacturers have primarily dealt with beauty from the outside, notes Dr. Fox. “But now, a growing number of cosmetic brands are rolling out new products promoting the idea that what consumers ingest can have just as big an effect on the healthfulness of their skin and the luster of their appearance as anything external they may apply. There is a growing convergence between external and internal beauty products.

“The key for consumers,” Dr. Fox continues, “is to understand that as beneficial as some nutritional supplements can be, some may have negative side effects that show up on their skin. Consumers should read labels carefully and ask their doctors or dermatologists if they have questions about taking supplements.” Remember that this area of cosmeceuticals is not as well studied as our pharmaceuticals which are FDA approved. Cosmeceutical manufacturers can make some outlandish claims intentionally that the government will usually not investigate.

Some supplements more concern than others

The U.S. National Library of Medicine Dietary Supplements Labels Database reports the nutritional supplements most frequently cited with skin side effects are: DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone); Chromium; Vitamin A; bee products (pollen, Royal Jelly); and Niacin (Vitamin B-3). DHEA, in fact, was formerly classified as a drug; today, after being reclassified by the FDA, it’s readily available as a dietary supplement.

What to ask before taking supplements

Before taking nutritional supplements, Dr. Fox suggests asking yourself these questions, some of which are recommended by the Iowa State University Food and Nutrition Department:

1. Do I need this supplement? (How much improvement can I expect?)

2. Do I know that this supplement is safe?

3. Do I know that the supplement works? (What is the risk/benefit ratio?)

4. Does this supplement interact with any drug or food I currently consume?

5. Can I afford this supplement? (Are there cheaper, equally effective alternatives?)

6. Do I know enough about this supplement?

“Thousands of dietary supplements are on the market,” says Dr. Fox. “Many contain vitamins and minerals to supplement the amounts of these nutrients we get from the foods we eat. But there also are many products on the market that contain other substances, such as high-potency free amino acids, botanicals, enzymes, herbs, animal extracts and bioflavinoids, for example.

“The Food and Drug Administration’s review of the safety and efficacy of these products is either non-existent, or significantly less, than for drugs and foods, so be alert about using nutritional supplements, especially if they are not ‘pure,’ but contain other substances,” says Dr. Fox.

The natural way to healthy skin

“Healthy skin reflects a healthy body,” he concludes. “A balanced diet, containing natural vitamins and minerals, plenty of water and exercise will enhance the health of your skin now and as you age.”

Glutathione is a material found naturally in the human body. It is made of the amino acids Glycine, Glutamic Acid and Cysteine. As we age our Glutathione levels start to decline. Many scientists now believe that how long we live is directly proportional to how high our Glutathione levels are. Glutathione functions in our body as the master antioxidant. Glutathione protects our body like other antioxidants, but is also capable of recharging and increasing your bodies levels of other antioxidants such as Vitamin A, C, and E. If you could only take one antioxidant supplement it would be Glutathione. Glutathione has a potent effect on protecting the body’s protein structures such as the collagen in our skin. Users of LifeWave have reported remarkable reductions in fine lines and wrinkles within a few weeks of using this product. Glutathione is one of the most powerful materials known at being able to detoxify the body of heavy metals. In fact, Glutathione injections have been used in hospitals for many years as a means to remove Mercury from the body. As we exercise our body becomes stressed and depleted of its antioxidant supply. By supplementing with Glutathione it has been shown that people can achieve remarkable improvements in their athletic performance. As we age our immune system becomes weaker and more susceptible to outside invaders. It is well known that Glutathione is a center piece of our immune systems and can help to protect our body from harm and damage. It was …

Fargo, ND (PRWEB) January 13, 2009

With the recent extreme temperatures throughout the U.S. this winter, many are feeling the effects of dry skin. According to The National Center for Health Statistics, 9 million Americans have complained about dry skin. During the winter months, dry skin is exacerbated by low humidity and traveling from the warmth of a house to the freezing chill of the air outside. Thankfully, Swanson Vitamins has 6 tips to help with the nuisance of dry skin.

Things to do on the outside:

Place a humidifier next to your bed at night with the door closed. This will help keep moisture in and create the humidity needed.

When taking a shower or bath, limit your time to 10 minutes and use luke-warm water. Water that is too hot can dehydrate the skin. Pat your skin dry, do not rub, and apply a moisturizer to damp skin. Nature’s Gate Colloidal Oatmeal Lotion contains oatmeal, a wonderful skin-soothing ingredient.

Taking a sole bath using Dr. Barbara Hendel’s Himalayan Crystal salt not only rejuvenates you from the inside, it also causes salt to be stored in the top layer of the skin so that it stays moist and supple.

Mix your lotion with coconut oil. Yes, it is an ingredient listed in many recipes found at Swanson Vitamins, but it can also be used topically to support skin health. Coconut oil is quickly absorbed into the top layers of the skin to provide incredibly soft skin.

Supplement from the inside out:

Drinking 8 glasses of water a day is not only a good tip for a weight-loss plan, it’s also a good tip when wanting to hydrate your skin. Water can plump up skin cells to create a softer, smoother skin texture.

Increase EFA’s in your diet. Omega-3 fatty acids help replace moisture in dry hair and skin. Swanson Vitamins has MultiOmega with Fish Oil which combines flax, borage and fish oils that not only supports skin health, but supports cardiovascular and joint health as well.

Swanson Vitamins is an industry leader in bringing vitamins direct to consumers at the lowest price possible. Swanson Vitamins, located in Fargo, ND, offers the highest quality vitamins, supplements and natural health care products and is GMP certified. Swanson Vitamins goes a step beyond its competitors by offering powerful guarantees.
Best answer:

Answer by William T
Chances are your body simply cannot absorb all the vitamins and supplements that you’re taking. You will absorb what your body can use, most likely a small portion of the first pill, and then the rest will become urine. Very expensive, vitamin rich urine, but urine all the same.

Minneapolis, Minn. (PRWEB) April 8, 2006

With an estimated 50 million to 70 million individuals suffering from sleep disorders ranging from insomnia, sleep apnea, to restless legs syndrome, it is clear that sleep disorders are a chronic and growing problem for Americans. Sleep disorders are estimated to cost employers $ 150 billion dollars per year in lost productivity. Sleep disorders also are estimated to cost $ 48 billion dollars per year due to fatigue-related accidents. Individuals with undiagnosed sleep disorders are not only missing sleep, they are risking their health.

“Sleep enables the body to clean house and perform needed repairs. It is essential for recovery from wear and tear,” according to Byron J. Richards, nationally-recognized health expert and author of Mastering Leptin. Sleep medications can be addicting and cause dangerous situations such as sleep driving, a new phenomenon. There are natural options available to support quality sleep. Magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine is an important mineral for relaxation and sleep. High quality coral calcium allows natural relaxation and helps naturally support restless legs syndrome. The quality of nutrients is extremely important to see results. Avoid products with fillers or additives, which could cause an allergic reaction. Avoid magnesium oxide and low quality calcium such as calcium carbonate or coral calcium derived from oyster shell.
